Sunday School

Regular Sunday education is considered very important in the congregation. Classes are held at 10:00 AM every week. For many years our Superintendent was Ottis Sandusky. He has retired effective 2004 and the newly appointed superintendent is Ronnie Atwood. Teachers are: Nursery – Jamie Middleton; Youth – Martha Wethington; Teenagers - Patsy Atwood; Adult - Alberta Williams, Emily Marvel and Dimple McAnelly (sorta retired).

Awards are given every quarter for those who have attended every Sunday for that period. Those who successfully attend for a year are given a gold round pin bearing the Methodist name and a red cross. This pin can be added on to with each successive year of perfect attendance.

Sunday Worship
Weekly each Sunday at 11:00 AM we worship with singing, prayer concerns, praise reports followed by a special song by Wanda Parton and sermon by Bro. Ed Parton.

For the youth children who attend, we have a short Children’s sermon each week. If the secrets were known, the adults get a lot out of these sermonettes as well. Marcella Carr, Martha Wethington, Jamie Middleton, Pat Williams, Bill Marvel, Bobby Atwood, Joey Daniel, Elaine Atwood and Wanda Parton give the sermons.

On the first Sunday of each month we join together for Holy Communion.

Mid-Week Service
Wednesday nights at 7:00 PM we hold a service on a rotating schedule. The first Wednesday of the week is called a Singfest. Essentially we practice songs, some familiar and some new selections. But basically we have fun raising our voices in praise. The last Wednesday of the month is Pitch-in night, where we come together for a meal – this is at 6:30 PM – nothing special but just time to visit and talk. The other Wednesdays are set aside for Bible study led by Bro. Parton.
Kids (and Teens) for Christ (KFC)
A service is held for the youth each Wednesday at the same time as adult Bible study and singing. When started our youth were “kids” but have since grown into teens – therefore the name change. We encourage and youth in the community to join them in activities. Field trips, pizza parties and skating trips are just some of their activities that have grown from their weekly meetings.
Missions We Support
Every 5th Sunday our Sunday school collection goes to support the Methodist Children’s Homes of Versailles and Louisville.

Once a month we have a special collection for a couple (Ron and Bonnie Gouge) that is currently serving in Bolivia as missionaries. Before taking this appointment they were regular attendees of Atwood Chapel. We have supported them since they started their missionary work in 1984.

United Methodist Women
The women of Atwood Chapel have met for so many years that no one seems to remember when it started. The second Tuesday of the month is UMW at 7 :00 PM. It is usually held at the church but occasionally we go to the home of one of the members, especially during the Christmas season. We have a book where our lesson is taken from, we can read ahead of time and be prepared to discuss how the lesson impacts their life. The teacher/ leader is Alberta Williams and Co-chairpersons are Lucille Stafford and Martha Wethington. We take up $1 each month for the treasury from everyone who attends.
