What is the Walk to Emmaus?
Walk to Emmaus is a spiritual renewal program whose sole purpose is to strengthen the local church through the development of Christian disciples and leaders. It does so by inspiring, challenging and equipping local church members for Christian action in their homes, churches, workplaces, and communities. The Walk to Emmaus experience begins with a 72-hour short course in Christianity, comprised of fifteen talks by lay members and clergy on the themes of God's grace, disciplines of Christian discipleship, and what it means to be the church. The course is immersed in prayer and meditation, times of worship, music, small group participation, and daily celebration of Holy Communion. The Emmaus community - those who have attended an Emmaus weekend - supports the 72-hour experience with a round-the-clock prayer vigil, by preparing and serving meals, and other acts of love and self-giving. The Emmaus Walk Weekend begins Thursday evening and concludes Sunday evening. Men and women attend separate weekend events.
The intent of this three-day course in Christianity is for local church members to gain new levels of openness and commitment as followers of Jesus Christ. During the event, the people have the opportunity to reflect on the meaning of their faith in God and relate with others who are also seeking a deeper faith in, and relationship with Jesus Christ.
While the Walk to Emmaus is a part of The Upper Room (a ministry of The United Methodist Church) the weekend event is designed to be ecumenical and focuses on unifying denominations in fundamental Christian beliefs. People who have attended a weekend event return to their home church to become leaders and to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ in their community.
What happens on the Weekend Event?
The Emmaus Weekend centers around a group of 15 talks by lay persons and clergy which focus on the essentials of the life of a disciple of Christ, from the amazing grace and love of the Father demonstrated in the atoning sacrifice of His Son, to the priorities which direct our lives, to the spiritual disciplines, to our relationship to and actions as Christ's hands and heart in a hostile world. Personal and private prayer, singing and worship, daily celebration of communion, small group discussion, and other spiritually uplifting activities blend with the talks to provide a smoothly integrated learning, worship and relationship building experience. Any simple set of descriptives cannot adequately communicate what really happens in and among the people as a result of being together for three days, focused on the love of God. While the Emmaus Walk is fun and rejuvenating, it is also concentrated and full. Each of the three days has distinct and deliberate personalities reflecting a Trinitarian framework. The focus of Day One is God and our relationship with God as the result of His reaching out to us and our response of faith. The focus of Day Two is Jesus Christ, his sacrificial love, and each disciple's response to the grace of God embodied in selfless love among those in the Christian community. The focus of Day Three is the Holy Spirit and the call to live as an active member of the body of Christ through service in church and community, embodied in our hope in God's continuing intervention in our world. All three days point to the Fourth Day-living every day as a walk with Christ in the company of one another, through a lifestyle of regular prayer, study, and service.
The three days as a whole are immersed in prayer and signs of the sacrificial service on the part of many who help make each Walk happen.
What is an Emmaus Community?
The Community is made up of people who have already participated in a weekend event and continue to explore ways of Christian growth and worship together. Each month our Community comes together for a time of worship and fellowship on the fourth Saturday at First United Methodist Church of Corbin, located on Falls Road just east of I-75.The Community also has the supporting role for each weekend event and many people participate through service and prayer to ensure that the weekend event is special for all who attend.
